The Women’s Academy finally got their season underway with their first fixture away at Huddersfield last Wednesday. After training together over the last few weeks, this was their first test as a team. The team started brightly and played some great combinations with chances being created, but none of them were put away. The score remained 0-0 up until half way through the first half. Substitutions changed the game, with Lily coming off the bench to make an impact within minutes with a well taken finish to put the Imps 1-0 up. The goal was quickly followed by another, again from Lily who was causing the defence problems, to make it 2-0.
Huddersfield had attacking spells too throughout the first half which made the game a great watch. The Imps continued to play and had further chances to extend the lead but the Huddersfield Goalkeeper was having a brilliant game alongside the Huddersfield defence.
The game continued with the Imps creating more chances, hitting the woodwork on occasions. Huddersfield had chances to get back into the game but the score remained the same. The Imps got their third of the game with Lily getting her hattrick with another close range finish to beat the Huddersfield Keeper.
Further chances resulted in further goals for the Imps with Maddi getting on the score sheet and Lily adding a fourth to her tally. There was controversy around two of the goals, but with the offside flag not being raised by the officials the goals stood and the Imps sealed a 6-0 win in their first fixture of the season.
Congratulations girls and good luck for the rest of the season!
