Small Goals: Finding my Inspiration

By Vicki Chapman, Director of Finance & Governance

During the winter lockdown of 2020/21, I attempted a running challenge of 1.1 miles a day for advent so that by Christmas Eve, I’d done the distance of a marathon. Cue, bad knees, followed by a bad foot, ending with acupuncture to resolve! Determined to complete the challenge, which was actually to run, walk or crawl (!), I completed it by walking the distances and at the grand old age of 41 earned my first ever medal!

As motivation to keep up with the walking through those difficult winter lockdown months, I signed up for a Winter Season challenge of walking 100 miles in the three months of January to March. Because the medal was a puzzle piece for an annual Four Seasons challenge, I continued through 2021 and now have the full set: Medals = Motivation!

Of course, it’s not all about the medals, I also gained a friend in Alice after meeting up for our first walk together over the Christmas 2020 period, leading to us doing the Walk in the Park! Foundation challenge together.

Alice’s running (medal board!) and The Walk in the Park challenge inspired my son Lincoln, then 6, to want to run a marathon! So in August, he started the weekly parkruns with Alice.

As of the end of 2021, he’s completed 17 of these 5k runs with a PB of 36:13 and a personal worst of 1:10:29 – he’s easily distracted by dogs, trees and chatting! Add two Christmas fun runs to that and he’s challenged himself to run a 10k in 2022.

We are a happier, healthier family!
