Sincil Bank Community and University of Lincoln Join Forces

Updated: Jul 14, 2021

An aim of the Foundation’s Sincil Bank community work (or Place-Based Social Action - PBSA) is to increase the skills of local people and bring greater opportunities for different individuals to interact together in a variety of forums.

We are happy to report that a collaboration has begun between local Sincil Bank residents and a cohort of students from the University of Lincoln. The students are all studying either project or events management and have committed to sharing their learning with the local community. The first online event was an introduction of those involved and an outline of how events can be planned and developed in a structured fashion.

Neville Coupland, Community Organiser at Lincoln City Foundation said:

“It was a pleasure to see ages from all generations interacting, having fun and learning from each other. Local residents have lots of experience organising events and activities so learning was happening in both directions. The students all live in Sincil Bank and have a high degree of motivation to be involved with developing new things in this area.”

Dr.Georgiana Els, Senior Lecturer at the University of Lincoln, further commented:

“Excellent training was delivered by the students to the Sincil Bank community volunteers. They did a brilliant job at engaging community organisers in a friendly, professional way. Events and project management was applied in a community context and was explored via digital tools and techniques”.

The delivery of this training marks an exciting time where the Sincil Bank community can start to look forward to restarting community events and activities in their neighbourhood. Following the success of this first training event with University of Lincoln students there are now further plans to run additional training events which will be open to the local community to access.

The Sincil Bank neighbourhood in Lincoln is one of only 10 places in the whole of England to be part of the Place Based Social Action (PBSA) programme, a joint £4.5m programme between the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and The National Lottery Community Fund. PBSA aims to create positive change by enabling people, communities, local non-statutory organisations and the statutory sector to work collaboratively to create a shared vision for the future of their place and address local priorities through social action.
