Members of our Fighting Fit programme donned their fancy-dress costumes for their session on Tuesday 8 August to raise money to fund their cancer care sessions.
The fundraiser also aimed to help the programme purchase radar keys and ‘just can’t wait’ cards which are extremely helpful tools for anybody living with cancer. Music played at the start of the day as the group warmed up before taking part in a circuit course at Yarborough Leisure Centre which was enjoyable for all involved. The session ended with cake, food, a raffle and some social time, with the Lincoln mayor, Biff Bean in attendance to offer his support to the programme. One member of the group, Jo, started coming to the Fighting Fit sessions in December having been diagnosed with cancer the previous month. She said: “I came to Fighting Fit because they said if I can get physically fit then that will benefit me. I joined the group and didn’t know what to expect, and it changed everything. Physically it was fantastic, and mentally it’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done. “It’s a whole group of people that just get it, you don’t have to apologise, you don’t have to explain, you don’t have to make excuses. If you’re having a bad day, you can just say you’re having a bad day, and that’s fine. It’s fabulous, it’s brilliant.” Jo was also passionate about how crucial radar keys and ‘just can’t wait’ cards can be to people living with cancer. She added: “We need to put the awareness out there; we need to get people to know that there is support out there. Cancer is the loneliest thing in the world but here, suddenly, you’ve got a whole family who understand you. If we can raise funds and awareness and get these ‘just can’t wait’ cards, then that is super important. “We all have embarrassing situations that affect bodily functions, and you may need the toilet in urgency, you may need to change yourself urgently. Having those cards there takes the embarrassment away. It takes all the embarrassment out of it, it makes it easier for us and easier for retailers, and it just makes life better.” Fighting Fit sessions run across Lincolnshire, and for more information please visit our Fighting Fit page here: https://www.lincolncityfoundation.com/fightingfit
