ESOL learner opens new business in refurbished Cornhill Market

Selina Wong moved from Hong Kong to England two and a half years ago knowing very few people, in a place that was foreign to her.

Fast forward to Friday 16 May 2024 Selina opened ‘Bubble Kiss’ for business - a market stall based in the Cornhill Market selling bubble tea and bubble waffles.

Positioned next to the famous Stokes coffee, Selina’s new venture is a huge step forward for her in launching her very own brand.

Selina said: “My shop is going to sell bubble tea because I love bubble tea in Hong Kong! I tried to find a business opportunity here, and during that process I found this market.

“It’s beautiful, and so I sent a proposal to the council and they accepted me, so I’m trying to start my business here.”

Upon moving to Lincolnshire Selina joined the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes hosted by Lincoln City Foundation at the LNER Stadium.

With the help of her tutor she built up her confidence and knowledge of the language, and now studies in the higher group, and is in the beginning stages of building her ‘Bubble Kiss’ brand.

Selina was even recognised by a local award as she was one of four students in Lincolnshire to be named ‘Learner of the Year’ after being nominated by her teacher.

She explained: “Lincoln City Foundation helped me a lot. When I came here I knew nobody.

“I learned English in Hong Kong but I found upon moving here that the language is actually different to what I first thought, and my teacher Babs aided me in these situations.

“The Foundation has been very helpful, and I’m very appreciative because they have helped me a lot.”

Selina has also been grateful for the strong sense of community that has been fostered by the group, and now considers a lot of the group she learns with as friends.

She gushed: “In the class we had students from all around the world.

“We had students from Egypt, some from Poland, I’m from Hong Kong, and some from South Korea so there were a multitude of different cultures represented.

“We talked to each other and got to know each other and bonded over learning English together.”

Selina is also raising two children, one boy and one girl, and she explained how they had a hand in helping her create the logo of her new business.

She said: “I have two children, one boy and one girl. My girl is 11 years old and she loves drawing, so when I told her that I’m going to have a shop to sell bubble tea she drew a logo for me.

“She designed a logo by herself and when I looked at the logo I came to the name Bubble Kiss.”

‘Bubble Kiss’ opened along with the Cornhill Market on Friday 17 May, with her bubble tea and bubble waffles now available to buy!
