On Saturday 12 October Lincoln City DS Active’s squad took to the pitch at Bottesford Town for an inspiring Special Olympic Tournament, hosted by Bottesford Town Football Club.
A huge thank you goes out to Mick Potts and Bottesford Town FC for the hard work, dedication, and passion they poured into bringing this event to life. We also want to extend our appreciation to the Special Olympics representatives for organising such a fun and well-structured event that brought together players from different backgrounds and abilities.
This tournament included a streaming process, where players took part in skills tests to gauge their levels. Our team was grouped with Bottesford Blue, a PAN disability team with many players who also had Down Syndrome, and Cambridge, another PAN disability team.
Representing Lincoln City DS Active were our dedicated players: JJ, Tom N, Tom W, Orla, Mila, Darryl, Will, Ruth, and Josh. JJ took on goalkeeping duties for most games, with Tom W stepping in when needed.
Match highlights:
Game 1: Imps vs. Bottesford Blue
In their opening match, Lincoln showed determination, with Tom W scoring their first goal of the day.
Game 2: Imps vs. Cambridge
The team put forth a spirited effort against a strong Cambridge side, who brought plenty of pace to the game. Lincoln players kept up a fantastic spirit, showing their resilience and enthusiasm.
Game 3: Imps vs. Bottesford Blue
As the tournament progressed, Lincoln found their rhythm, and the game felt evenly matched.
Game 4: Imps vs. Cambridge
With a great display of teamwork and skill, Tom N scored a memorable hat trick to wrap up the official matches.
Throughout the tournament, each of our nine players displayed flashes of brilliance and continued improving with every game. The remaining time was spent in friendly matches, including penalty shootouts, adding to the excitement of the day.
The tournament concluded with a medal ceremony, where every player received a well-deserved medal in recognition of their effort and teamwork. It was a fantastic day, full of fun and camaraderie despite the rainy start. The team reconnected with old friends and made new ones, and coaches from other teams had nothing but complimentary words for the City players.
